Splish Splash I was takin' a bath
with some way-out bath bomb from Lush
The color and scent were so heady
It almost made me blush!

365 Photo of the Day

As we were locking the door on our way out for our date today, I asked my crazy-handsome husband if he might consider a jacket in case we hit inclement weather on our journey. He waved his hand at me as if to shoo a fly and said he would be fine without. I left it there.  Well, we experienced a true deluge in Penticton and he got thoroughly soaked. I was so happy. OH - not about him getting doused and all that (haha) but happy because we truly need rain to help dampen the fires. It only rained heavy and hard for about 15 minutes.

All shivery, we snuggled up to fresh hot samosas and wrapped ourselves around cups of steaming chai tea.

Simon Says Wednesday “Anything Goes” Card

I find that making a card is my big reward, my relaxation, my happy little place even after working all day, even though I play with paper all day long.  I sneaked this card in over the past day.  I had made a similar card a few weeks ago and loved the technique so thought I’d try it again.  I like that it uses recycled materials (the transparent window)

Visit Simon Says Wednesday Card challenge to see what other folks made with the anything goes theme.

SSW-Aug-26-anything-goes---Barb-Derksen-1

Supplies: Embossing folder by Darice, Stamp by Forever in Time, 140 lb arches Watercolor paper for stamp, tombow markers, embossing powder, plastic transparency (recycled from product packaging) Pearlescent paints.

Method:

I created a window cut using my Silhouette Cameo for the card front.  I embossed it.  I cut some plastic packaging the same size as my card face and glued it to the back side of the embossed window. I stamped the front of the transparency window with Stayzon Ink, centering it very carefully.  I then stamped the image onto 140 lb watercolor paper using Versafine ink,  then embossed it.  I colored with TomBow markers for the inside of the stained glass looking image, then painted some pearlescent paint on the frame to look sort of gilded.  I glued the watercolored image to the top center of my card base.  I then bumped out the face of the card, lining it up with the image on the card base, but using foam tape so it stands out.  This creates the 3D look for the image.

I finished off with the little ribbon in gold, to reflect the gold of the frame.  I’m leaving this card “as is” for now, though I may add a sentiment on the bottom right at some point when I decide who its intended for.

Thanks for visiting today!

Wine Roller

Well, this is my Mother in Law’s rolling pin – when we couldn’t find the real one.  Perhaps this is why the peach pie tasted SO good!

Simon Says Monday Card ‘ticket’ and 365 Photo of the Day

Check out today’s Simon Says Monday challenge – the theme is ‘Ticket Please’

I whipped up this card:

SSM---Ticket-Barb-Derksen

I mostly wanted to use three main ingredients – KimB’s Simple Pleasures Kit from The Digital Press, and use this Forever in Time ticket stamp which I recently bought and then add the little anchor which was given to me.  The wave graphic is from Kim’s kit, as well as the sentiment.  The polka dot paper is from American Crafts.

CAS on Sunday card and 365 Photo of the Day

I’m starting off with a card I made quick quick this evening, felt the urge to create.  Today’s challenge is to use VELLUM.

You can find the challenge on the CAS blog site HERE.

My card turned out like this:

CAS-on-Sunday-#-65-Barb-Derksen

I used an Xcut embossing folder.  A layer of sparkly vellum. A stamp by Hot Off the Press and a couple of shiny sequins.  Voila!

Smoke Aug 23 2015 1

Smoke and more smoke.  The road home today.

Smoke Aug 23 2015 2

All the way from the coast of BC to the Okanagan, its all smoke.  Mostly coming from just south of the USA border though we still have a bit of our own.  The smoke doesn’t recognize the border. Thank you to all the firefighting and emergency crews who battle the blazes for us.

Fires all around us here in the Valley between Oliver and Osoyoos BC.
Fires burning for two days now.
The plane above is an Air Tractor" which picks up water from the lake and dumps it on the fire.
Last night I was away up the valley but was really surprised to see
The Oliver fire services online on my 5-0 Radio App on my iPhone!

It was fascinating to listen as the fire departments all pulled together with the utilities (water/irrigation and telephone)
Comforting to know these folks at protect us.

Sadly, we know some people who have lost their homes, both here in Osoyoos and in the Rock Creek area.
Will post more tomorrow.

My prayers are with everyone here in the valley.

Liked the first one better but this was good!

Next attempt will be a curry, I think.

Less is More 236 Card and Photo of the Day

Squeeezed in a card today, between still catching up tasks after being away for a while.  I find being creative is my big reward and relaxes me.

Less is More 236

One Layer Card

This month we have the title

The Eyes Have it!

So your card this week should have eyes on it somewhere.

Please remember that we LOVE to see WHITE SPACE as part of your design and NO other layers, with minimal embellishments (if any).

Here’s my take:

LIM-236---Barb-Derksen

I rooster stamp is by Recollections, the EYE word are too.  The “miss you” is Paper Smooches. The stamped backdrop colors were made with a Stampin’ Up stamp and using Stampin’ Up inks.  The only other touch is Mr Rooster’s beady eye.

Mmmmm – CHOCOLATE!

chocolate 1

There is chocolate and then there is CHOCOLATE.  THIS is THAT kind of chocolate.  Eva the owner (prounounced AVA because its supposed to be spelled with a comma over the E but I don’t know how to do this here) is quite a character – always upbeat and I do declare that she looks younger every time we visit.  Could it be from imbibing of her own fabulous bon-bons?  Eva has the coolest Hungarian accent and it draws me back to a dear friend from long ago who would call me her “lilly sveethart” – I kind of mist up!

chocolate 2

There’s always some serious humour served up with the sugar (and of course sweet ‘sugar free’) at the shop.  And its impossible not to experience laughter in the shoppe and have your ears filled with satisfied sigggggghhhhs of pleasure.  Even the names of the chocolates are exotic – Elderberry (first in the valley we’re told!), Orange Imperial, Bohemian and Tangerine Curaco – to name a few.  And we are talking truffles.  Truffles with a high dome and an inside that is always an impossibly light rich – and depending on which flavour you choose, tangy – filling. Oh MY!

Mojo 409 Card and 365 Photo of the Day

Finally having a chance to craft a card after a long stretch away from my sweet Cameo and supplies.  It feels so good to create something!  I’ve chosen to make this week’s challenge for:

Mojo Monday # 409

Here’s my swing on this sketch:

Mojo-409---Barb-Derksen-(1)

Stamp by Stampin’ Up, The kraft paper is from my scraps stash, unfortunately I didn’t mark the maker on the back – something I need to do in the future.

Mojo-409---Barb-Derksen-(2)

The rest is simply glitter paper cut on my Cameo and stacked in alternating layers for height and effect.

Miners Lamp 2

I thought this antique Miner’s head lamp makes a cool photo – its hard to imagine someone really wore it.  The bottom tank (square) holds fuel which burns with the wick.
